The Duffers, Dillmans and Kumara power stations are key to ensuring reliable electricity supply to the West Coast. The Big Wainihinihi and Arahura Wainihinihi catchment intakes collect water in the mountains behind the scheme, this water joins the Kawhaka Creek catchment intake and makes its way down to Duffers Power Station. The Loopline and Kapitea Reservoirs supply Kumara Power Station.

Recreational activities in the area include fishing, power boating on the sheltered Kapitea Reservoir, kayaking, tramping and rock fossicking.

There is a native fish pass at the Kawhaka intake.
