Piriaka was originally built to supply power for the Taumarunui borough. A second powerhouse was built in 1971 that doubled output at Piriaka with a horizontal Kaplan turbine.
The area around Piriaka provides great fishing and kayakers can use one of the power station tail races as an entry into the river.
